About

Scoil An Croí Íosa is a vibrant primary school situated in the heart of Galway City, welcoming children from junior infants through to sixth class. Rooted in the Presentation tradition, the school provides a Christian‑based ethos that promotes equality, respect and a supportive learning environment. Its central location gives pupils easy access to Galway’s rich cultural and educational resources, including strong links with the University of Galway, local theatres, galleries, libraries and museums, as well as community businesses and services. The school places a strong emphasis on holistic development. Active‑school initiatives aim to achieve the Active School Flag through daily exercise, healthy eating and a wide range of sports, including participation in the FAI 5‑a‑Side inter‑school competition and hosting a European School Sports Day. A robust creative arts programme offers colour‑strings, instrumental music, choir and band activities, and partnerships with organisations such as Music Generation and the Galway Arts Centre. Outdoor learning is fostered through a forest school programme, a sensory garden and an on‑site school garden where pupils grow fruit, vegetables and flowers, encouraging teamwork, language development and environmental stewardship. Scoil An Croí Íosa also supports academic excellence and personal growth through initiatives like the Incredible Years behaviour management programme, the NUIG Youth Academy for high‑achieving pupils, and the “Every Child a Reader” project. After‑school care is provided for all year groups, offering homework help and a variety of enrichment activities in a safe, nurturing setting.

History

The school continues a tradition of education that the Presentation Sisters began in 1815. Known locally as “the Pres”, Scoil An Croí Íosa has built on this legacy to become a modern primary school that blends historic values with contemporary teaching practices.
