About

St. Michael’s Girls’ National School is a Catholic primary school in Tipperary Town that educates girls from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The school promotes a happy, healthy and active environment where learning is both exciting and stimulating. A strong emphasis is placed on high standards in core subjects while also nurturing a wide range of talents through music, art, sport, drama and information technology. The curriculum is delivered in a non‑competitive manner, encouraging every pupil to achieve success across the whole programme, with opportunities to enter competitions in athletics, science, handwriting and the arts. The school benefits from modern facilities, including a five‑classroom building expanded over the years to eight classrooms, and high‑speed broadband connectivity provided under the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme. A vibrant choir and music programme see pupils performing locally and nationally, and the school’s supportive community, including an active Board of Management and Parents’ Association, underpins a holistic approach to each child’s intellectual, physical, cultural, moral and spiritual development.

History

St. Michael’s G.N.S. traces its origins to 1842 when it was built by A.J. Fahie and operated for 134 years in the building now known as the Community Centre on St. Michael Street. In 1976 the school relocated to its present site, initially comprising five classrooms. An extension in 1980 added a sixth classroom, and further expansion in 2006 provided two additional classrooms, bringing the total to eight. Throughout its long history the school has remained the longest established provider of primary education for girls in Tipperary Town, maintaining a strong Catholic ethos and a tradition of academic and extracurricular excellence.
