About
Ballymartin National School, situated in the rural community of Manister, County Limerick, provides a contemporary primary education within a purpose‑built, modern facility. The school’s premises, extensively renovated and opened in 2006, contain four well‑equipped classrooms, a dedicated Learning Support Room, a Resource Room, staff offices and a fully equipped pre‑school area. Recent developments have added a new sports pitch and a suite of digital resources, including twenty‑four laptops, to support a broad curriculum that balances academic rigour with creative and practical learning. The school’s educational philosophy is holistic, aiming to nurture each child’s intellectual, emotional and social development. Core values such as inclusivity, environmental stewardship, community collaboration, integrity and resilience underpin the curriculum, which encourages critical thinking, lifelong curiosity and responsible citizenship. Through hands‑on projects, teamwork and a strong emphasis on empathy, pupils are prepared not only for examinations but for the wider challenges of life.
History
The site’s educational roots trace back to the 1700s‑1800s when hedge and classical schools operated locally. The original Ballymartin National School was constructed in the 1850s as a single‑storey building with two classrooms, dry toilets and a spring‑water pump; it is now a protected, derelict structure. In 1968 a prefabricated two‑teacher school was erected on land donated by John Hanley of Springlodge, providing indoor toilets, running water and a telephone. Plans for a new building emerged in 1989, and after a prolonged campaign the current modern facility was completed and officially opened in 2006, featuring four classrooms, specialist rooms and a pre‑school. Between 2013 and 2015 the Board of Management secured a new sports pitch, introduced twenty‑four laptops and enhanced morning routines, reflecting ongoing investment in the school’s infrastructure and resources.
