About

Rockcorry Church of Ireland National School is a small, purpose‑built primary school situated on the edge of Dartrey Forest, just outside Rockcorry, County Monaghan. The modern facility, opened in September 2012, comprises three classrooms, a dedicated resource room, a learning‑support suite, staff room, offices, a general‑purpose hall and fully equipped toilets. The expansive grounds include a grass pitch, a hard‑core pitch and ample parking, providing ample space for outdoor play and physical education. The school’s educational ethos centres on a happy, caring and secure environment where every child is valued, respected and encouraged to reach their full potential. It adopts a holistic, pupil‑centred approach that nurtures intellectual, physical, social, aesthetic, spiritual and emotional development, underpinned by inclusive values such as respect, self‑discipline and self‑esteem. The school is committed to non‑discriminatory admission practices and works closely with the National Council for Special Education to support children with special educational needs.

History

The original Rockcorry National School opened in the village in 1846. Among its most notable pupils was John Robert Gregg, inventor of Gregg shorthand, who enrolled in 1872. The historic building was renovated in 2002, but in 2007 the Dartrey and Rockcorry Group of Parishes secured a new site from Coillte at Dartrey Forest. This led to the construction of the current state‑of‑the‑art facility, which opened its doors in September 2012.
