About
Scoil Mhuire is a co‑educational, Catholic primary school located in the village of Swanlinbar, West Cavan. The school provides a welcoming, pupil‑centred environment where children are encouraged to reach their full academic, social, physical and moral potential. A low pupil‑teacher ratio ensures that learners receive small‑group attention from an early age, fostering confidence and a love of learning. The ethos is built on partnership between staff, families and the local community, with a strong emphasis on safety, well‑being and the development of responsible citizens. Beyond the classroom, Scoil Mhuire offers a broad range of extra‑curricular activities. It is a recognised Health‑Promoting School, participates in the Food Dudes campaign, holds Green School status and has won the Bord na Móna ‘Eco Rangers’ competition for biodiversity work. The school is actively involved in sport, particularly Gaelic football, and provides opportunities in quizzes, art, tin‑whistle and singing. Facilities include a school garden, sports provisions linked to the Active Schools programme, and resources that support both mainstream and special‑education needs.
History
Scoil Mhuire opened its doors in 1968, consolidating four local schools – Uragh Girls, Uragh Boys, Commas and Tiercahan – into a single primary institution serving the Swanlinbar area. Over more than five decades the school has grown into a vibrant community hub while retaining its commitment to Catholic values and inclusive education.
