About
Threen National School is a small, two‑teacher country school situated on the Galway road near Saint Caolin’s Church in the village of Trien, County Roscommon. The school provides a well‑equipped learning environment with two spacious classrooms, a dedicated learning‑support/resource room, a front hall, community room and kitchen, as well as modern IT facilities including interactive whiteboards, visualisers, broadband connectivity, laptops and iPads for pupil use. Outdoor provision comprises ample play space, an infant play area, a school garden and a pitch, supporting both physical activity and experiential learning. The school’s educational approach is inclusive and holistic, aiming to help each child reach their academic, spiritual, moral and social potential. A staged approach to special education needs is employed, with resource teaching and differentiated instruction to meet diverse learning requirements. Strong links with the local community encourage participation in GAA, soccer, drama, library and youth organisations, enriching pupils’ social development and preparing them for secondary education. The school’s ethos promotes effective communication, self‑worth and a lifelong thirst for learning, fostering confident members of society.
History
Threen National School was originally built in 1873 and later extended in 1931 and again in 2007. Located beside Saint Caolin’s Church, the school has evolved from a single‑room building to a facility with two large classrooms, specialised support rooms, community spaces and modern technological resources. Over the decades it has maintained strong ties to the local community, with many families spanning generations attending the school. Recent developments have added an infant play area, a school garden and a pitch, while IT infrastructure has been upgraded with interactive boards, visualisers, broadband and a fleet of laptops and iPads. The school celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023.
