About
St Joseph’s National School, Aughavas, is a vibrant Catholic primary school situated in the heart of the rural community of Aughavas, Co Leitrim. As a DEIS‑supported institution, the school provides a caring, child‑centred environment for its 44 pupils, employing multi‑grade classrooms that foster strong relationships and personalised learning. The curriculum is broad and balanced, delivered through active, inquiry‑based methodologies that nurture curiosity, creativity and confidence while integrating Gospel values and a strong sense of community. The school places a high priority on partnership with parents and the wider community, supported by a dedicated Special Educational Needs (SET) team that ensures tailored support for every learner. Environmental stewardship is a core value; the school was awarded its 10th Green Schools Flag in 2024 for the theme *Global Citizenship – Food and Biodiversity* and is working towards its 11th flag. A rich programme of sport, including Gaelic football, soccer and athletics, alongside robust arts, music and cultural activities, promotes holistic development and wellbeing for all pupils.
History
St Joseph’s National School opened its doors in 1982 and has since been a central pillar of the Aughavas community, evolving into a small rural DEIS school renowned for its tradition of excellence, inclusion and community spirit.
