About

Ardvarney Mixed National School is a small rural primary school situated in a hilly area east of the local town. The school caters for children from Infants through to Sixth Class and currently has a roll of around 31 pupils. The learning environment is designed to be welcoming and community‑focused, with a strong emphasis on holistic development that balances academic study with a wide range of extra‑curricular activities. Physical wellbeing is a core part of the school’s ethos. The school is working towards its first Active School Flag and runs a variety of programmes such as weekly tennis coaching, swimming lessons at the Sligo Sports Complex, active maths trails, and daily “run around Europe” challenges. Cultural enrichment is also encouraged through initiatives like a Spanish language programme for senior classes and heritage outings with the Heritage Council. Regular community events – including a Halloween party, National Tree Day tree planting, and charity jersey days – foster a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere for pupils and families alike.

History

Ardvarney National School was built in 1965 to serve the local community. Since its establishment it has remained a focal point for primary education in the area, evolving over the decades to incorporate modern active‑school initiatives while retaining its traditional role as a close‑knit rural school.
