About

Anacarty National School is a co‑educational Catholic primary school serving the parishes of Anacarty and Donohill in County Tipperary. The school places the child at the centre of learning, aiming to maximise each pupil’s talents through a balanced programme of basic academics, cultural awareness and personal development. A strong partnership with parents and the Board of Management underpins a caring, happy and secure atmosphere where discipline is firm yet kind. The school benefits from a modern building opened in 2005 and provides a comprehensive range of facilities, including a fully equipped physical‑education suite, specialist resources for special‑needs support and up‑to‑date classroom technology. An active‑schools programme delivers daily movement breaks, weekly dance and fitness sessions and a full hour of timetabled PE covering athletics, aquatics, dance, gymnastics, games and outdoor adventure. The curriculum is complemented by a holistic approach to health, nutrition and wellbeing, reflected in dedicated policies on safeguarding, healthy eating and anti‑bullying. A vibrant community ethos is evident in the school’s emphasis on parental involvement, staff development and the celebration of local heritage, ensuring pupils grow academically while developing a strong sense of self‑worth and respect for others.

History

Elementary Catholic education existed in the parish during the Penal era and continued after the national school system arrived in 1831. By 1835, nine elementary schools served 770 pupils, with further schools established at Garyshane (1836) and Moheragh (1847). Amalgamations occurred in 1971 (Carhue NS with Annacarty) and the closure of Moheragh in 1996. The original school buildings were replaced several times; a new facility for Anacarty National School was opened on 1 September 2005. The school also participates in the Irish Folklore Commission’s 1937 collection, preserving local stories and traditions.
