About
St. Mary’s National School, Aughnasheelin is a small, rural DEIS‑designated primary school serving a close‑knit community in County Leitrim. With approximately fifty pupils from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, the school offers a highly personalised learning environment where each child is known individually and encouraged to develop confidence and a lifelong love of learning. The curriculum is delivered in a supportive atmosphere that values kindness, respect and hard work, and integrates creative, curious and caring approaches to teaching. The school makes extensive use of its natural surroundings, incorporating outdoor spaces into daily lessons to promote wellbeing, environmental awareness and hands‑on learning. Strong partnerships with parents and the wider community enrich the educational experience through sport, music, drama, green‑school initiatives and local projects. These collaborative links help pupils to develop social skills, cultural appreciation and a sense of belonging, while the small size fosters a family‑like environment where older and younger children learn side by side.
