About

Roscommon Community College (RCC) is a co‑educational, multi‑denominational community college serving over 580 students in Roscommon town. Backed by the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board, the college offers a broad curriculum that spans academic, technical and vocational subjects, aiming to empower learners to reach their full potential. The school prides itself on a supportive environment that promotes academic excellence, care, community, equality and respect, and it consistently records strong outcomes, with more than 90 % of its graduates securing their first or second choice places through the CAO. The college’s educational philosophy places the student at the centre of learning, fostering independence, civic responsibility and mutual respect. It provides a well‑structured Transition Year programme, a range of assistance schemes, career‑focused pathways and a managed exit policy to support diverse learner needs. Facilities are modern and extensive, including state‑of‑the‑art classrooms, science laboratories, metal‑ and wood‑work workshops, a working farm, playing fields and a purpose‑built canteen, with recent expansions adding further classrooms to accommodate a growing enrolment.

History

Technical education in Roscommon began in 1927 with domestic science, commerce and woodwork classes in Harrison Hall. Following the Vocational Education Act of 1930, land was bought on Lanesboro Street in 1934 and Roscommon Vocational School opened on 3 September 1937, initially enrolling 109 pupils. In 1943 the school received its own Group Certificate examinations, and a Leaving Certificate programme was introduced in 1976 after the advent of free education. Overcrowding in the early 1980s led to the construction of a new purpose‑built campus on the town’s outskirts, featuring playing fields, a working farm, workshops, laboratories and modern classrooms. Reflecting the shift towards a broader curriculum, the institution was renamed Roscommon Community College in September 2005. Subsequent developments include two new classrooms in 2013 and four additional classrooms for the 2014/2015 academic year. In 2013 the former Vocational Education Committee merged into the Galway and Roscommon Education and Training Board.
