About
Aughrim National School is a co‑educational, Roman Catholic primary school under the patronage of the Archbishop of Dublin. It is an inclusive, child‑centred institution that strives to create a safe, comfortable and happy environment where pupils develop kindness, independence, resilience and a love of learning. The school follows a broad curriculum aimed at achieving strong literacy and numeracy outcomes while nurturing respect for self, others and the wider world. The campus boasts extensive facilities, including nine mainstream classrooms, a dedicated class for children with autism and a second special class planned for 2025. Outdoor amenities feature a large playground with tarmacadam courts, grass pitches and a hard‑court basketball area. Recent building extensions have provided a modern hall with a stage, an expanded library, upgraded staff rooms and accessible toilet facilities. Classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards, ergonomic workstations and a fully integrated IT network, supported by a substantial inventory of iPads, laptops and charging docks.
History
The original granite schoolhouse, built in 1894, served the community until 1961 and housed both Aughrim B.N.S. and Aughrim G.N.S. A new five‑room school opened in 1961, initially separating girls and boys, and later became a mixed national school after absorbing pupils from nearby one‑teacher schools in the 1960s. A population surge in the late 1970s and early 1980s prompted the use of the old granite building and an increase in staff to eight teachers with enrolments reaching 250. Major building projects in 1985, 1998‑2001, 2002‑2005, 2007‑2011 and 2012‑2013 added extensions, hard‑court areas, a state‑of‑the‑art hall, a library, upgraded heating, fire and security systems, interactive whiteboards and extensive IT resources. Ongoing upgrades have replaced flooring with marmoleum, refreshed interior paint, and expanded digital learning tools.
