About
Ballinagree National School is a rural, co‑educational primary school situated in the village of Ballinagree, 8 km north of Macroom. The school provides a Catholic‑based yet inclusive ethos, welcoming children of all faiths and promoting respect, responsibility and gender equity. Learning is centred on the individual pupil, with a strong emphasis on active, creative teaching that nurtures intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural development. Gaelic language instruction receives particular focus, reflecting the school’s commitment to Irish heritage. The school’s facilities support a broad range of activities: a dedicated breakfast club, before‑ and after‑school childcare, and well‑maintained playgrounds and sports areas. Green Schools initiatives encourage waste reduction, recycling and environmental stewardship, while regular trips and extracurricular programmes—such as visits to Leinster House, Dublinia, and local sporting events—enhance experiential learning. With an enrolment of around 60 children, the school maintains small class sizes that foster close community ties and personalised support for each learner.
History
In June 2023 Ballinagree National School marked its 125th anniversary with a special mass and community gathering, unveiling a commemorative timeline at the school’s front entrance. The celebration highlighted the school’s long‑standing role in the local area since its establishment in the late 19th century.
