About
Baltydaniel National School is a vibrant primary school situated in the townland of Baltydaniel East, serving a mixed‑age community of approximately 155 pupils from a range of cultural backgrounds. The school prides itself on providing a secure, caring and well‑ordered environment that promotes the holistic development of each child. A dedicated team of nine teachers—including mainstream, resource and learning‑support staff—works alongside six special‑needs assistants, a secretary and a caretaker to ensure personalised attention and a high standard of education. The curriculum is broad and balanced, covering core subjects such as English, Irish and Maths, as well as a rich programme of creative and practical subjects including music, visual arts, drama, physical education and the STEAM approach (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The school actively participates in national initiatives such as the Active School Flag, Amber Flag for mental health, and Green School environmental programmes, reflecting its commitment to physical wellbeing, mental health and sustainability. Modern facilities, a supportive community ethos and a focus on nurturing each child’s unique abilities underpin the school’s reputation for academic excellence and personal growth.
History
Baltydaniel National School was built in 1994, replacing an earlier school on the same site that dated back to 1884 with a two‑room extension added in 1928. By the 1980s the original building was in poor condition, lacking indoor toilets and central heating. Following a sustained campaign by the then principal, parents, the local community and Fr Gerard Condon, the new school opened in 1994. Today it operates with nine teachers, a range of support staff and serves around 155 pupils. The school takes its name from the townland of Baltydaniel East, which historically derived from the former name Baltydonnel associated with the nearby Springfort Hall.
