About

St Ciaran’s National School, Baylin, is a co‑educational Catholic primary school serving a rural catchment that includes Baylin, Athlone, Moydrum, Glynwood, Coolvuck, Walderstown and surrounding townlands. With an enrolment of approximately 220 pupils, the school provides a well‑ordered, caring and secure environment that nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural development of each child. The ethos promotes gender equity, respect for people and property, and encourages the use of the Irish language, while recognising the religious diversity of the community. The school benefits from a modern learning environment built on a foundation dating back to 1949. An original building was extended in 1994, three state‑of‑the‑art classrooms were added in 2013 and two further large classrooms together with a new staffroom were completed in 2021. These facilities support a broad curriculum that includes green‑school initiatives, sport, wellbeing programmes and a creative corner, fostering holistic development. The school’s crest, featuring the historic Twyford (Baylin) Cross, reflects its local heritage, and the motto “Knowledge and Respect” underpins the community’s commitment to high standards of learning and personal growth.

History

The school was originally situated a mile nearer Athlone in Lower Warren. The first building was erected in 1949, with an extension added in 1994. In 2013 three large, state‑of‑the‑art classrooms were constructed, and in 2021 two additional large classrooms and a new staffroom were completed, reflecting the steady increase in pupil numbers due to local housing development over the past two decades.
