About
Belmullet Senior National School (Scoil Chroí Mhuire gan Smál) is a co‑educational primary school serving the Belmullet community. The school employs a team of five class teachers, two special‑education teachers and two special needs assistants, providing a supportive learning environment for its 128 pupils. The pupil body is culturally diverse, including children from Irish, English, Polish, Latvian, Brazilian and Ukrainian backgrounds, reflecting the inclusive ethos of the school. Academic provision is complemented by a broad range of extracurricular activities – sport, drama, music, quizzes, fundraising events, workshops and other initiatives – encouraging students to develop confidence, creativity and teamwork alongside their formal studies. The school’s educational philosophy places a strong emphasis on participation and personal development, guided by the Irish motto “Mól an óige agus tiocfaidh sí” (Nurture the youth and it will flourish). Facilities are organised to support both mainstream and special‑educational needs, with dedicated staff to ensure that every child can engage fully in classroom learning and the wider school community.
History
Scoil Chroí Mhuire gan Smál opened in 1898 as separate boys’ and girls’ schools. In 1969 the two schools merged to become a mixed junior and senior school, adopting the name Belmullet Senior National School.
