About
Boherbue National School is a Catholic primary school situated in the rural village of Boherbue, at the centre of the Duhallow area in County Kerry. Under the patronage of the Bishop of Kerry, the school provides a pupil‑centred, inclusive environment that nurtures the moral, spiritual, physical, academic, aesthetic and cultural development of each child. The ethos stresses cooperation between home and school, encouraging parents to be active partners in learning and promoting respect for diversity, environmental awareness and community involvement. The school caters for children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class, with a current roll of around 193 pupils supported by eight class teachers, two special‑needs teachers and three school‑age assistants. Facilities include a range of classrooms—including four additional rooms added in the 1970s—a playing field and dedicated spaces for extracurricular activities such as music, set dancing and sports. A strong emphasis is placed on holistic learning, creativity and confidence‑building, preparing pupils to become responsible citizens in a modern, multicultural society.
History
The original National School opened in 1846 in the Square of Boherbue. It relocated to its present site on the Knocknagree Road on 5 November 1934. The separate boys’ and girls’ schools were amalgamated on 9 January 1970, becoming a Central National School. To accommodate a growing pupil population, four extra rooms were added to the 1934 building and a playing field was developed at that time.
