About

Bohermore National School is a co‑educational primary school situated in Ballysimon, County Limerick, operating under a Catholic ethos and the patronage of the Archbishop of Casher & Emly. The school provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for children aged 4‑12, with a strong emphasis on holistic development and community spirit. It currently accommodates 100 pupils across four mainstream classrooms, three specialist classrooms for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and an early‑intervention class, supported by a dedicated team of teachers, Special Education Teachers and Special Needs Assistants. The campus blends historic charm with modern facilities. The original “Old School” building, dating from 1859, now houses a preschool, early‑morning drop‑off service and an after‑school care programme. Recent extensions have enhanced the learning environment: a 2020 addition provides a purpose‑built ASD classroom with accessible toilet and shower facilities, a withdrawal room and staff amenities; a 2022 modular expansion added two mainstream classrooms and a further SEN classroom. Plans are underway for a permanent extension to deliver high‑quality, purpose‑built learning spaces for the future.

History

The school’s origins lie in the “Old School” opened in 1859, originally comprising a single classroom and a teacher’s residence, both heated by open fireplaces and lacking running water or electricity. In 1991 the present school building replaced an earlier two‑room prefab attached to the Old School. A modern extension was completed in 2020, adding specialised facilities for ASD pupils, and a further modular extension in 2022 introduced additional mainstream and SEN classrooms. In October 2024 the school celebrated its 165th anniversary, marking over a century and a half of education in the Ballybricken & Bohermore parish.
