About

Caherconlish National School is a vibrant primary school situated on Main Street in Caherconlish, County Limerick. The school places a strong emphasis on inclusive, modern learning, recently receiving a 2021 grant under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan to bridge the digital divide. This funding enabled the introduction of Scratch coding, robotics programmes and the provision of iPads, ensuring pupils develop essential digital skills alongside the traditional curriculum. The school offers a comprehensive range of extracurricular activities, including a newly‑established Morning & After‑School Club, sports training, gardening projects, book clubs, shared reading sessions and regular musical and art exhibitions. Awards such as Student of the Month, Gaeilgeoir na Míosa, Kindness and Attendance recognise academic and personal achievement. Community engagement is highlighted by events like the annual sponsored walk, visits from the Mayor and collaborations with local organisations, contributing to the school’s Green Flag status and fostering a strong sense of civic responsibility.

History

The present Caherconlish National School, over 70 years old, is the fourth school building in the village. It replaced an earlier stone‑built school that was destroyed by fire in 1944. After the blaze, classes were temporarily held in Inch St Laurence Church for two and a half years before a new building, constructed by Crowley’s of Charleville, opened in 1947 with four classrooms. Subsequent developments included the addition of a purpose room (the GP room) around 1977, a temporary closure in 1980 for extensive upgrades, and the erection of prefabricated classrooms during the works. The school has evolved from its early days without electricity or heating to a modern facility equipped with digital resources and a range of community‑focused amenities.
