About

Cahermore National School is a small, rural primary school serving the Allihies Parish on the western tip of the Beara Peninsula in County Cork. The school provides education for children from Junior Infants through to 6th class, fostering a close‑knit community atmosphere where each pupil receives personalised attention. The curriculum follows the national primary framework, emphasising literacy, numeracy, and the development of social and creative skills, while integrating the unique cultural heritage of the Beara region. The school operates with a modest number of dedicated classroom teachers who cover the full range of primary year groups, supported by a special education teacher and classroom assistants. This structure enables the provision of inclusive education, ensuring that learners with additional needs receive appropriate support within the mainstream setting. Facilities include well‑equipped classrooms, a dedicated space for special educational provision, and access to outdoor areas that allow for experiential learning linked to the surrounding natural environment. Strong ties to the local community are a hallmark of the school, with families and volunteers contributing to a vibrant school life that includes events, cultural activities and a focus on environmental stewardship. The school’s rural location offers students a unique learning backdrop, encouraging an appreciation of the local landscape and heritage alongside their academic studies.

History

Cahermore National School was built in 1979 following the amalgamation of three local schools – Cahermore NS, Lehanmore NS, and Cluin NS (Allihies Village). The merger created a single, central primary school to serve the Allihies Parish on the Beara Peninsula.
