About

Coláiste Ríoga is a newly established, 1 000‑place post‑primary school in Dunshaughlin, County Meath, operating under the patronage of the Louth and Meath Education and Training Board. It is a multi‑denominational, co‑educational institution that delivers its curriculum through the English language and places the learner at the centre of its educational philosophy. The school aims to provide a welcoming, inclusive and dynamic environment where students can experience a broad and diverse range of Junior Cycle subjects, supported by modern resources that mirror those of a permanent state‑of‑the‑art campus. Although the permanent building is still under development, the school currently occupies high‑quality temporary accommodation that includes specialist facilities for a growing special‑needs provision, notably two dedicated autism classes opened in 2022 and 2023. A robust support framework comprising a guidance and counselling department, student support teams and a caretaker ensures that academic progress and wellbeing are closely monitored. A vibrant extra‑curricular programme – from science and language weeks to debating, choirs and green‑school initiatives – complements the academic offering, fostering leadership, creativity and community engagement.

History

Coláiste Ríoga was created to meet the post‑primary education demand of South Meath, particularly the Dunshaughlin School District. Announced by the Department of Education in autumn 2020, the school was awarded to LMETB after receiving roughly 60 % of local votes. A site adjacent to the Willows housing estate was secured, and planning permission for temporary accommodation was obtained. Principal Declan Clarke and Deputy Principal Shabana Hussain Dowd were appointed in early 2021. The school opened on 1 September 2021 with eight pupils and has expanded each year, reaching 112 students and a staff of fourteen teachers by September 2023. Special autism classes were introduced in 2022 and 2023. The school’s colours are black and amber; its motto is “Oideachas don Saol” (Education for Life). Plans for a permanent, purpose‑built campus are at an advanced stage, with a fourth block of temporary accommodation expected in September 2024.
