About
Colehill National School (St Sinneach’s N.S.) is a co‑educational, child‑centred primary school situated in the rural community of Colehill, County Longford. Operating under the patronage of the Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, the school embraces a Catholic ethos that promotes respect, kindness, compassion and the acceptance of difference, while welcoming children of all faiths and none. The curriculum follows the Irish Primary Curriculum and is delivered in an integrated manner that recognises individual strengths and challenges, aiming to develop clear, creative and critical thinking alongside strong moral values such as honesty, justice and sensitivity. The school places a strong emphasis on holistic development, encouraging participation in a wide range of sports and activities including Gaelic football, soccer, basketball, tag rugby, rounders and the Mile Challenge. Health‑focused initiatives foster healthy habits and lifestyles. Facilities have been continually modernised: the original 1965 building has been expanded with a general‑purpose room, additional classrooms, upgraded windows and a bright, spacious environment. A dedicated Breakfast Club and After‑School Facility, run by Sherpakids, provides supervised homework support and a variety of extracurricular activities.
History
The school is named after St Sinneach, who, with St Sinneach Ógh, founded the first church in the parish. Colehill National School opened in 1965, replacing separate boys’ and girls’ schools that dated from 1898. During construction pupils were temporarily taught in nearby locations. The original structure comprised three classrooms and basic facilities. In 1970 a prefabricated classroom was added after the closure of Clonfide school. A purpose‑built general‑purpose room and classroom were erected in 1979‑80, followed by a further classroom in 1997 (now the Breakfast Club/After‑School Facility). Funding in 2007‑08 enabled a full window upgrade and the addition of two new classrooms, resulting in the bright, modern school that serves the community today.
