About

Crumlin National School is a co‑educational Catholic primary school situated in the rural parish of Abbeyknockmoy, Ballyglunin, Tuam. Set on a generous three‑acre site, the school benefits from ample green space, including two sports pitches, a basketball court and two dedicated play areas, providing a safe and stimulating environment for outdoor learning and recreation. The school adopts a holistic, child‑centred approach, seeking to nurture and respect each pupil so they can develop as well‑rounded individuals. A broad range of extra‑curricular activities supports this ethos, with GAA coaches delivering hurling, camogie and football sessions, a Connaught Rugby coach, regular visits from specialist music teachers for string instruments, a drama teacher, Irish‑dance classes and seasonal art workshops. The school is actively pursuing its fifth Green School Flag for biodiversity, aims to secure its first Active Flag, and is working towards a Discovery Primary Science Award, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental education and scientific inquiry. With a modest roll of around 120 pupils and a dedicated team of mainstream teachers plus a learning‑support resource teacher, Crumlin National School provides a caring, supportive setting that encourages academic progress alongside personal growth.

History

Crumlin Boys National School opened on 1 July 1885, followed by Crumlin Girls National School on 1 November 1902. In 1970 the two schools amalgamated and relocated to the present three‑acre site, becoming the co‑educational St Bernard’s National School, Crumlin that operates today.
