About

St Peter’s National School, Dromiskin is a mixed, Catholic primary school serving children from Junior Infants to Sixth class. Operating under the patronage of the Archdiocese of Armagh, the school follows the Department of Education and Skills curriculum and engages in regular self‑evaluation to maintain high standards of teaching and learning. With a roll of around 240 pupils, the school provides a supportive, vertically‑structured environment that encourages participation in a broad range of subjects, including English, Irish, maths, science, art, music, PE and SPHE. The campus is richly equipped with extensive outdoor learning spaces. Highlights include a Biblical Garden beside the ruins of the old Roman Catholic chapel, an Outdoor Classroom, a Butterfly Garden, an Insect Village, an Intergenerational Garden featuring a miniature round tower, and the award‑winning Dreamtime Garden with a pond viewing stand. A Sculpture Trail, an Incredible Edible Garden and a well‑maintained basketball court further enhance the learning environment. The school’s strong commitment to sustainability is reflected in multiple Green Flag awards, a Marine Environment Flag, and a series of local and national environmental recognitions. Community involvement is a cornerstone of school life. Initiatives such as the walking bus, Climate Action Week, biodiversity projects and collaborations with Dromiskin Tidy Towns demonstrate a vibrant partnership between pupils, staff and the wider community, fostering a sense of global citizenship and environmental stewardship.

History

The present St Peter’s National School building opened in 1976, but the site’s educational heritage stretches back to circa 1830 with the “Old, Old” school, followed by a 1927 school that now houses a successful play school. An extension begun in March 2014 added a new classroom, resource rooms, upgraded offices, heating and other improvements, opening for the 2014/15 academic year. Further expansion was approved in 2016, delivering two additional classrooms and a third resource room, completed for September 2018. That same year, under the Summer Works Scheme, toilet facilities in seven original classrooms were refurbished and ceiling tiles replaced. Over the years the grounds have been developed with gardens, a sculpture trail and numerous environmental awards, reflecting the school’s long‑standing commitment to both education and the natural environment.
