History

The original Glasheen Boys National School opened in September 1897 with 53 pupils in the old school house in Glasheen village. A new nine‑classroom building was erected in 1955 on the present School Avenue site, followed by a two‑storey, six‑classroom block with a school hall in 1972. Comprehensive renovations in recent years have introduced new windows, fencing, fire doors, flooring, and water‑conservation measures. In 2011 an outdoor classroom, upgraded WC facilities, disabled access and an indoor sensory room were added. Further expansion in 2014 brought three new classrooms, senior infant rooms, an infant playground, a sensory playground, a community liaison room, a school garden, new offices, a reception area and a new roof on the junior building. Subsequent improvements included yard resurfacing, a polytunnel, parents’ room, additional classrooms and resource rooms (2015‑2017), ASD class and new furniture (2018), a major extension completed in 2020, and additional support rooms in 2021. The school maintains strong academic and sporting traditions, holding numerous national awards and recognitions for health promotion, inclusivity and digital distinction.
