About
Gort National School is a Catholic primary school situated on the outskirts of Gort, County Galway, operating across two sites – the historic Convent building on Queen Street for Junior Infants to 3rd class and the former Boys School on Tubber Road for 4th to 6th class. The school provides a caring, well‑ordered environment that nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural development of each pupil. Recent funding from the EU’s NextGenerationEU programme has enabled the purchase of additional digital equipment, helping to bridge the digital divide and support learners at risk of educational disadvantage. The school’s ethos is rooted in Gospel values and a commitment to religious tolerance, welcoming children of all denominations. Its mission stresses equal opportunity, the cultivation of virtues such as charity, justice and self‑discipline, and the encouragement of each child to achieve their personal best. Partnerships with the Department of Education, the Board of Management, parents and the wider community underpin a whole‑school development approach, ensuring a supportive and inclusive learning community. A major extension to the Tubber Road site is planned under the Government’s five‑year building programme, which will eventually bring all classes onto a single, modern campus, further enhancing the school’s facilities for teaching, play and extracurricular activities.
History
Gort National School was established in September 2015 following the amalgamation of The Convent and Scoil Eoin. The school currently operates on a split site, with Junior Infants to 3rd class housed in the former Convent building on Queen Street and 4th to 6th class in the former Boys School on Tubber Road. A government‑funded five‑year plan for a major extension to the Tubber Road premises will eventually consolidate all pupils onto a single site.
