About
Hazelwood College is a second‑level Community College situated on an eleven‑acre site just outside Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick. It provides education for around 600 pupils, offering a broad curriculum that blends academic subjects with practical programmes such as woodwork, construction studies, home economics and technology. The college places a strong emphasis on co‑curricular and extra‑curricular activities, supporting students to develop sporting, artistic and entrepreneurial skills through a well‑structured programme that includes clubs, competitions and community projects. The campus has evolved since its opening in 2002 into a multi‑building, warm and modern environment. Recent retro‑fitting under the Pathfinder scheme has achieved an A‑energy rating, featuring sustainable air‑water heating, mechanical heat recovery, enhanced insulation and triple‑glazed windows and doors. Facilities include a full‑size GAA field with a wheelchair‑accessible hard‑surface area for soccer, basketball and tennis, an indoor basketball court, a fully equipped gym, a PE hall, and a range of specialised rooms – science labs, language laboratory, engineering and technology workshops, music department, art studio, library, stage with sound and lighting, and modern computer suites. The college’s ethos is underpinned by the core values of Excellence in Education, Care, Respect, Equality and Community. These values shape the learning environment, guiding curriculum delivery, decision‑making processes and the relationships that form the daily life of the school community.
History
Hazelwood College opened its doors in September 2002 on a €6 million development at Kells Cross, Dromcollogher. An initial phase‑1 extension was completed just before the opening, and a subsequent phase‑2 added a state‑of‑the‑art Technology Room. In September 2018, phase 3 introduced eleven additional classrooms and upgraded sporting facilities, increasing the school’s capacity by roughly 40 % and allowing it to accommodate over 600 students. From an original enrolment of about 200 pupils, the college has grown steadily, expanding its campus and facilities to meet the needs of the local community.
