About
Irishtown National School is a mixed, Catholic primary school situated on the R328 between Ballindine and Dunmore in County Mayo. With an enrolment of around 62 pupils, the school offers a close‑knit learning environment supported by a team that includes mainstream class teachers, a special education teacher and several special needs assistants. The timetable runs from 9.10 am to 2.50 pm with a short morning break and a half‑hour lunch, providing a structured yet flexible day for young learners. The curriculum is enriched by a strong emphasis on experiential and outdoor education. Regular Forest School sessions, delivered in the woodland and park opposite the school, develop physical coordination, fine‑motor skills, problem‑solving and teamwork. The school also follows the Aistear framework for early childhood education, exploring themes such as home, shopping, the restaurant and community life. Creative partnerships, including art workshops with Mayo County Council and historical outreach programmes, broaden pupils’ cultural awareness. A vibrant parent association and participation in local sports quizzes further reinforce community involvement and holistic development.
