About

Kilcrohane National School is a small, co‑educational primary school serving the Sheeps Head peninsula in County Cork. With a roll of roughly 30‑40 pupils aged four to twelve, the school provides a mainstream curriculum complemented by dedicated special‑education support, a full‑time school‑nurse aide and a part‑time aide. The learning environment is enhanced by a purpose‑built Resource Room (added in 2016) and modern high‑speed broadband connectivity delivered through the Department of Education’s School Broadband Programme, enabling the use of tablets and laptops acquired through a 2021 grant aimed at narrowing the digital divide. The school places a strong emphasis on health, wellbeing and environmental stewardship. It is recognised as a Health‑Promoting School and has earned eight Green Flags for its work in waste reduction, energy, water, travel and biodiversity, with a ninth flag awarded in May 2025. Its commitment to science, technology, engineering and mathematics was acknowledged with a STEM Award from Science Foundation Ireland. These initiatives are supported by a vibrant programme of extracurricular activities, including battery‑recycling challenges, sports days and community‑led projects that foster global citizenship and sustainable practices.

History

Kilcrohane National School was originally constructed in 1902. In 2002, to mark the school’s centenary, an extension was added and the building was refurbished. A further development came in the summer of 2016 with the addition of a new Resource Room to support special‑education needs. Over the decades the school has grown into a modern, environmentally‑focused primary school while retaining its close‑knit community character.
