About

Killavullen National School is a co‑educational, Catholic primary school that welcomes children of all faiths and backgrounds. The school’s ethos centres on providing a joyful, positive and secure environment where holistic education is delivered through a blend of academic learning, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) activities, sport and cultural programmes. Emphasis is placed on wellbeing, special education provision and the development of language, music and Gaelic games, fostering a strong sense of Irish heritage alongside modern digital skills. The campus combines historic charm with contemporary facilities. Recent extensions have created a spacious Halla na Scoile, a dedicated Support Education Room, a state‑of‑the‑art Sensory Room and a modern music room. Outdoor amenities include an Astroturf pitch, a tarmac‑marked yard, three basketball courts and wheelchair‑accessible toilets. Classrooms are equipped with SMART‑board TVs, laptops and iPads, supporting a digital‑first learning approach. The school also benefits from well‑maintained gardens, a new reception area and a safe, clearly defined entrance, reflecting the community’s commitment to providing a safe and inspiring learning environment.

History

Killavullen National School was founded in 1907 in the picturesque village of Killavullen, situated on the River Blackwater. The original building remains in use and has been progressively expanded. In 1994 a 100 m² purpose room was added, followed in 1995 by three mainstream classrooms and a staff room, marking the start of modernisation led by the then principal, Mrs Carmel Nagle. The centenary celebrations in 2007 brought an Astroturf area and a marked tarmac yard, funded by the Parents’ Association. A major extension in 2013 introduced the Halla na Scoile, a Support Education Room, improved disability access with wheelchair‑friendly facilities, an enlarged staff room, a PE equipment store, a new roof, a connecting corridor, a new reception, and enhanced car‑park and garden spaces. In 2018 the former purpose room was renovated to provide a sixth mainstream classroom, a music room, a second wheelchair‑accessible toilet and a cutting‑edge Sensory Room. Over three decades of community fundraising and campaigning have resulted in a modern, fully equipped school that serves the local parish.
