About

St Brigid’s National School, Kill, is a Catholic primary school serving the rural parish of Kill in County Cavan. The school positions itself as a centre of excellence, delivering quality teaching and learning within a happy, welcoming and inclusive environment. Emphasis is placed on partnership – pupils, parents, staff and the wider community work together under the motto “Ag Obair le cheile” (working together) to foster a supportive atmosphere where each child can reach their full potential. Small class sizes enable more individual attention, and a dedicated learning support team provides additional assistance for pupils with special educational needs. The curriculum reflects a broad, balanced approach, incorporating Irish language and culture, music, science, sport and traditional Irish games such as hurling and sliotar. The school’s crest symbolises its global responsibility, Christian heritage and commitment to environmental stewardship, underscoring a holistic education that values both academic achievement and personal development. Bus transport is provided for pupils across the extensive parish, ensuring accessibility for families throughout the community.

History

Prior to 1972 the parish had four small one‑teacher schools (Tullyvin, Kill, Drumnatrade and Cornasaus). In the late 1960s the Department of Education policy favoured the consolidation of these schools into a central institution. Consequently, St Brigid’s National School was established in 1972 as a three‑teacher school, later expanding to four teachers and adding a remedial (learning support) teacher in 1998. The school operates under the patronage of the Bishop of Kilmore and is governed by an elected Board of Management representing the local community.
