About

St Aidan’s National School is a Catholic primary school situated in Kiltimagh, County Mayo, welcoming children from the town and its surrounding rural hinterland. The co‑educational centre provides a holistic curriculum for junior infants through sixth class, aiming to meet each pupil’s academic, spiritual, social and emotional needs. A dedicated team of mainstream teachers, special‑education teachers and assistants, together with support staff, delivers a structured yet stimulating learning environment. The school occupies a well‑maintained building on a three‑acre greenfield site that offers extensive outdoor facilities, including a very large football pitch, a basketball court, a one‑wall handball area, spacious play zones and a school garden. Recent ICT grants have equipped classrooms with modern technology, enhancing interactive teaching and learning. An inclusive ethos ensures that pupils with special educational needs receive tailored support, while a broad programme of sports, quizzes and community‑based initiatives such as the Credit Union savings scheme and Trócaire Lenten campaign fosters participation, teamwork and civic awareness.

History

The original Town Hall Theatre in Kiltimagh served as the Old Boys School; about fifty years ago the boys moved to a building now used as the Health Centre, the final location before amalgamating with the girls in 1988. In 1987 a new co‑educational central school, St Aidan’s N.S., was constructed on a three‑acre greenfield site donated by the Sisters of St Louis to accommodate pupils from Kiltimagh B.N.S. and the former St Aidan’s N.S., bringing together twelve teachers. Teachers and pupils moved into the new school in September 1988, and it was officially opened in May 1989. The school retains the Catholic ethos of its predecessors and operates under the patronage of the Bishop of Achonry.
