About
Lismire National School is a rural, co‑educational Catholic primary school serving the village of Lismire in the parish of Kanturk. The school’s ethos is centred on providing a well‑ordered, caring and secure environment where the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, moral and cultural needs of every pupil are identified and nurtured. Learning is pursued in partnership with parents, guardians and the wider community, aiming to equip children not only for the academic challenges of secondary school but also for the broader journey of life. The campus has benefited from a series of modernisations. Since 2007 the school operates three contemporary classrooms, each fitted with an interactive whiteboard, and a purpose‑room opened in the late 1990s for specialised activities. Central heating, upgraded roofing, new windows and doors, and a well‑maintained sports pitch (opened 2014) support a comfortable and active learning environment. In 2017 a playschool, Cherryblossoms Lismire, was established on the grounds, extending early‑years provision for the local community.
History
The origins of education in the Lismire area date back to an 1838 petition for a school at Coolavoota, leading to the construction of the first school at Lismire Cross in 1846. A two‑storey building housed separate classrooms for boys and girls, with a porch added in 1892. In 1940 a new school was erected on the present site, funded by the Department of Education and local contributions, and the first pupil entered the building that year. The school expanded through the mid‑20th century, amalgamating with the neighbouring Tourard school in 1968 and adding prefabricated classrooms. Major upgrades included central heating in the 1980s, a re‑roof and new windows in 1991, the opening of a purpose‑room in 1998, and a 2006‑2007 extension that added two classrooms and interactive technology. A sports pitch was opened in 2014 and a playschool commenced operations in 2017, reflecting the school’s ongoing commitment to community‑focused development.
