About
Lucan Educate Together National School is a co‑educational primary school situated on Mount Bellew Way, Lucan, serving approximately 400 pupils with a dedicated staff of around 40. The school operates within the Educate Together framework, which places the child at the centre of learning and promotes an inclusive, multi‑denominational environment where every child’s ability, needs, pace of learning and individuality are respected. Small class sizes are maintained to ensure personalised support and to help each learner reach their full potential. The educational philosophy is built on four pillars – care, responsibility, equality and democracy – fostering a partnership between teachers, parents and the wider community. The curriculum is delivered through a child‑centred, democratic approach that encourages active participation, critical thinking and respect for diverse cultures, religions and lifestyles. Facilities have evolved from temporary port‑a‑cabins to a purpose‑built campus that provides modern classrooms, outdoor play areas and resources that support both academic and personal development, reinforcing the school’s commitment to a safe, healthy and happy learning environment.
History
The school’s origins date back to February 1997 when local resident groups in Lucan convened a public meeting to explore the establishment of an Educate Together school. The concept was to create an all‑inclusive setting that respects gender, religion, physical ability, ethnicity and social background. On 1 September 1997 the school opened in the local scout hall with 15 pupils under the leadership of Principal Tom Conaty and Assistant Sereen McCormack. Within two years the roll grew, prompting a move to four port‑a‑cabins on the grounds of St Edmundsbury. The school later relocated to its permanent site on Mount Bellew Way, where it has continued to expand, reaching an enrolment of 400 pupils by September 2023.
