About
St. Colman’s Boys National School is a modern primary school situated in Sleaveen East, Macroom, County Cork. The €3.68 million purpose‑built campus, opened in March 2009, houses ten classrooms all equipped with interactive whiteboards, a dedicated computer room with thirty networked PCs and twenty iPads, a G.P. Hall, playgrounds, a ball court and a playing pitch. These facilities support a broad curriculum that seeks to give each child the best opportunities and to foster self‑motivation and independent learning. The school places a strong emphasis on both academic and creative development. In addition to the core subjects, pupils benefit from a well‑resourced music programme – thirty instruments are available, tin whistle is taught in every class and a school choir is active. A varied extra‑curricular offering includes football, hurling, a physical‑education programme and participation in the West Muskerry Cross‑Country Schools Meeting. An active Parents’ Association works closely with the Board of Management to enhance the school community.
History
The original national school was established in 1908 on Cork Street, with earlier town schools located in Masseytown, Castle Street, School Lane and Chapel Hill. Up to 1991 the school was operated by the De La Salle Brothers. In March 2009 the school moved to its current state‑of‑the‑art building in Sleaveen East, providing modern classrooms and extensive facilities for its pupils.
