About
Monkstown Educate Together National School (METNS) is a child‑centred, multi‑denominational primary school situated on Kill Avenue in Dun Laoghaire, County Dublin. The school provides a happy, safe and inclusive environment where the individuality of each pupil is celebrated and learning is driven by curiosity, respect and joy. A strong democratic ethos underpins the partnership between staff and parents, encouraging shared responsibility for the children’s education, school finances and community life. The curriculum is complemented by a vibrant ethical programme, weekly assemblies, and a positive behaviour policy that uses restorative practice to foster respect and prevent bullying. METNS is committed to environmental stewardship, having earned five Green Flags and operating a Green Team that promotes recycling, energy conservation and outdoor biodiversity. Extra‑curricular activities span science, drama, music and sport, and the school’s facilities include a series of modern portacabin classrooms, dedicated spaces for art and technology, and well‑maintained outdoor play areas.
History
The school originated in September 1996 when a group of parents sought a multi‑denominational, child‑centred education in South County Dublin. After forming a steering committee under the Dalkey School Project, negotiations with the Department of Education and fundraising efforts led to a lease of the Monkstown site in early 1997. A temporary Board of Management was appointed in July 1997 and the school opened on 1 September 1997 in a single portacabin with two classrooms, enrolling 59 children. By the end of its first year enrolment rose to 71 and additional staff were appointed. Permanent recognition was granted in September 1998, and the school expanded with further portacabin units and staff, reaching 217 pupils by 2000. Throughout the 2000s the school added special‑educational support, a voluntary secretary, and continued to develop its artistic, scientific and community programmes.
