About
Newcestown National School, operating under the name Bishop Galvin Central School, is a co‑educational Catholic primary school serving the parish of Murragh and Templemartin. With an enrolment of approximately 225 pupils, the school provides a vertical, mixed‑age setting that enables younger and older children to learn together, fostering mentorship and a strong sense of community. Set on three acres of rural grounds adjacent to the local GAA club, the campus offers ample outdoor space for sport and play, alongside purpose‑built classrooms designed to support a broad curriculum. The school’s educational ethos combines a Catholic foundation with a commitment to inclusivity, aiming to nurture each child’s spiritual, social and academic development. Its mission emphasises a happy, caring and safe learning environment, while restorative practice is employed proactively to resolve conflict and promote responsibility. A focus on partnership with parents, staff and the wider parish community underpins the school’s vision that every pupil can “be the best they can be” and flourish in a supportive setting.
History
The school was established in 1971 when four smaller schools in the parish were amalgamated to form a central school for the local community. It is named after Bishop Edward Galvin, a native of Newcestown who co‑founded the Columban Missionary Society and served as a missionary in China. Since its opening, the school has grown to become one of the few central schools in the country, maintaining its Catholic ethos while evolving its facilities and programmes to meet contemporary educational needs.
