About

Scoil Bhríde is a Roman Catholic co‑educational primary school situated in the parish of Lackagh, serving roughly 250 pupils across ten mainstream classes. Operating under the patronage of the Archbishop of Tuam and the guidelines of the Department of Education and Skills, the school is committed to providing a welcoming, supportive environment that nurtures the holistic development of every child. The staff team includes teachers, special needs assistants and a full‑time secretary, all working together to deliver a curriculum that consistently exceeds the national average in English reading, maths and Gaeilge assessments. The school places a strong emphasis on early intervention, offering programmes such as Reading Recovery, Maths Recovery and year‑round literacy and numeracy stations to build a solid foundation for infant learners. A comprehensive Digital Learning Plan underpins the integration of modern technologies, with classrooms equipped with the latest digital resources to enhance teaching and learning. Scoil Bhríde also promotes a vibrant extracurricular programme. Strong parochial links to local GAA clubs complement a wide range of sports—including swimming, gymnastics, tennis, basketball, spike‑ball, soccer and Gaelic football—while the performing arts thrive through music, song, drama and choir activities. The purpose‑built two‑storey campus, opened in February 2018, provides contemporary facilities that support both academic and sporting endeavours.

History

The earliest recorded reference to the school dates to the 1831 Census, when the parish of Lackagh’s 2 190 residents were served by a single school and the Catholic Church. In 1886 the Old Lackagh School House was erected and remained in use until 1966. From 1966 to February 2018 pupils attended a building situated beside the church car park on the Lackaghbeg road. Following a tender awarded on 16 November 2016, the old structure was demolished to make way for a new two‑storey campus, which opened in February 2018, providing modern facilities for the growing community.
