About
Scoil Bhríde is a small primary school serving the rural townland of Lackagh, near Monasterevin in County Kildare. The school operates with a team of six teachers, delivering five mainstream classes together with dedicated learning‑support provision. Pupils are organised into Junior and Senior Infants, followed by first through sixth classes, allowing a smooth progression from early childhood through the end of primary education. The school day begins at 9.20 am, with supervision commencing at 9.10 am, and finishes at 2.00 pm for the younger classes and 3.00 pm for the older groups. The campus includes purpose‑built classrooms that have been expanded over time, most recently with additional rooms added in 2008. Uniforms are navy‑coloured with a pale‑blue shirt, reinforcing a sense of community and equality. A special education teacher provides targeted support for children with additional needs, and the school’s inclusive practice is documented in a recent SEN Inspection Report (2024). Facilities also accommodate safe parking for parents and a structured drop‑off system, ensuring orderly arrivals and collections. Scoil Bhríde places emphasis on a balanced curriculum that incorporates the Irish language, core academic subjects, and opportunities for spiritual development, as reflected in its sacraments schedule. The school’s charitable status (Registered Charity No. 20124700) underlines its commitment to serving the local community.
History
The original school building, erected in 1849 from lime and stone, housed a single classroom for 69 pupils (37 boys and 32 girls) and operated from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm, with the teacher earning £10 per year. A new two‑classroom school opened in 1957, forming the core of the present structure. Further expansion occurred in 2008 with the addition of modern classrooms. Uniforms were introduced in 1990, replacing the earlier practice of everyday clothing. The school commemorated 60 years of continuous teaching, marking its evolution from a modest one‑room school to a contemporary primary institution with specialised learning support.
