About
Gortaleam National School is a small, inclusive and vibrant rural primary school situated in the heart of the Gortnaleam community, serving families from Dunmore, Glenadmaddy and Williamstown. The school provides a welcoming, supportive learning environment for children aged 4‑12, operating two mainstream multi‑grade classrooms alongside a dedicated autism (ASD) class. Its educational approach is underpinned by Catholic values and a commitment to equality of opportunity, fostering academic achievement while nurturing curiosity, creativity and confidence through holistic, child‑centred teaching. The school’s facilities include a Junior Room, Senior Room, a purpose‑built sensory room and a staffroom equipped with cooking facilities. Outdoor amenities feature a large playing field, basketball courts, an active walkway, a soft‑play area, a playset and a well‑maintained garden. A Before and After School Club is available to all pupils. A broad range of extracurricular activities – such as chess, GAA, gardening, coding, baking and the Active Flag programme – support the social‑emotional development of learners and reinforce the school’s strong sense of community.
History
The original school was established nearby in 1886. A new school building was constructed in 1964, with two additional classrooms added in 2007. In 2025 a classroom was reconfigured to create the dedicated autism class.
