About

Scoil Mhuire, Milford is a Catholic primary school situated on Convent Road in the town of Milford, County Donegal. The school provides a holistic education that nurtures the intellectual, spiritual, moral, social, cultural and physical development of each pupil. Guided by the motto *“Ní Neart go Cur le Chéile”* (“There is No Strength Without Unity”), the school creates a welcoming, safe and well‑ordered environment where Christian values of truth, justice, respect and compassion are modelled daily. A strong partnership with parents, the Board of Management and the wider community underpins a collaborative ethos, encouraging active involvement and shared responsibility for pupils’ learning and wellbeing. The campus comprises a range of purpose‑built classrooms, including dedicated infant and junior blocks, a General Purpose Room, a Sixth Class classroom and specialised spaces for special educational needs, such as an autism class and dedicated SEN assistants. The school participates in national initiatives such as the Active Flag, Green Schools, and the Amber Flag, reflecting its commitment to health, sustainability and inclusive education. These programmes, together with a focus on academic excellence and personalised learning pathways, equip children to become confident, balanced and socially responsible members of society.

History

Education in Milford dates back to 1814. In 1896 the Catholic Church secured a grant to establish a school, initially operating from temporary premises. A purpose‑built two‑room school opened in 1902 on a site donated by the 5th Earl of Leitrim. Rapid population growth led to a new three‑classroom building on the present site in 1959, soon expanded with an additional classroom and an infant block. Further extensions in the early 1990s added a General Purpose Room and a Sixth Class classroom, with ongoing refurbishments and improvements continuing to the present day. The school has been led by a succession of principals, the current head having taken up the role in 2019.
