About

Scoil Mhuire (Moynalvey National School) is a small, rural primary school situated in the townland of Moynalvey, approximately four kilometres from Summerhill in County Meath. The school provides a caring, inclusive environment where children are encouraged to develop self‑discipline, mutual respect and a love of learning. Its ethos is rooted in Catholic values and a commitment to nurturing each pupil’s full educational potential through strong partnership between teachers and parents. The curriculum is delivered across six mainstream classes and is supported by a full‑time special education teacher and a shared special education teacher, ensuring that pupils with additional needs receive appropriate support. Moynalvey NS actively promotes holistic development through initiatives such as the Green Schools Project, the Active Flag programme and Health‑Promoting School status, reflecting a focus on environmental awareness, physical wellbeing and community involvement. Modern facilities include dedicated classrooms for each class level, a school garden, and spaces for sports and extracurricular activities, all designed to foster a happy, secure and stimulating learning atmosphere.

History

Official records date the school to 1844 when it operated from a one‑room thatched stone and clay building. This original structure collapsed during the great storm of 18 March 1855. A new two‑room slated school was completed in July 1856, which later fell into dereliction. The present school building was constructed in 1958 and opened for pupils in September 1959, providing the current home for the school’s community.
