About
St Bridgid’s National School, Duagh is a co‑educational primary school situated on the main road between Listowel, Co. Kerry and Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick. Under the patronage of the Catholic Bishop of Kerry and funded by the Department of Education, the school provides a full range of classes from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. Its ethos, encapsulated in the motto “Cairdeas agus Comhar” (friendship and cooperation), promotes a warm, child‑centred environment where every pupil is valued, respected and encouraged to develop a love of learning. The curriculum is delivered by a dedicated team of teachers and special‑needs assistants, with particular emphasis on nurturing curiosity, confidence and a positive self‑image. The school offers a supportive community for pupils, parents and staff, reinforced by an active Board of Management and Parents Council. Facilities include dedicated classrooms for each class level and an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) class introduced in September 2021, reflecting the school’s commitment to inclusive education. Daily routines feature structured breaks and lunchtime, providing a balanced schedule that underpins both academic and social development.
History
St Bridgid’s National School opened in 1971 as a central school created by amalgamating five smaller parish schools – Duagh, Islandanny, Derrindaffe, Dromlegach and Knockalougha. At its inception nine teachers were employed and pupils were transported by bus from the former school sites. The school has since expanded its provision, including the addition of an ASD class in September 2021, while maintaining its Catholic patronage and community‑focused ethos.
