About

Scoil Naomh Eoin, Ballinameen National School is a mixed, Catholic‑ethos primary school serving Junior Infants through Sixth Class. Situated a short distance from the village of Ballinameen in County Roscommon, the school operates under the patronage of the Diocese of Elphin and is deeply embedded in the local community. The school’s ethos prioritises respect, inclusion and excellence, aiming to provide a safe, vibrant and nurturing environment where every child can reach their full potential. A strong partnership with parents and guardians underpins the educational experience, reinforcing community spirit and shared responsibility for pupils’ development. The curriculum is broad and balanced, delivering high‑quality learning across academic, social and holistic domains. Pupils benefit from a wide range of extracurricular activities, including GAA football and hurling, soccer, computer studies, swimming, dancing and organised school tours. Dedicated staff and a voluntary Board of Management support these programmes, ensuring that children have access to diverse learning opportunities that prepare them for an ever‑changing world.

History

Education in Ballinameen dates back to a hedge school in 1824 with 75 pupils. The first official National School opened in November 1844 (Roll 4217), followed by Knockglass National School in 1845 and a Female School in 1859. By 1862 enrolments totalled 539 pupils across the three schools. In 1897 a new building was erected on the present community‑centre site, initially housing separate boys’ and girls’ sections; by 1898 the combined enrolment reached 250. The schools later merged under Roll 14925. The current Scoil Naomh Eoin building opened in 1967 and remains on that site, with planned redevelopment to sustain the school for future generations.
