About

Scoil Naomh Muire is a co‑educational Catholic primary school situated in the village of Farran, parish of Ovens, west of Cork city. It welcomes children from infant to sixth class and provides dedicated special classes for pupils diagnosed with autism, reflecting a strong commitment to inclusive education. The school operates under the patronage of the Bishop of Cork and Ross and follows a curriculum that balances academic rigour with spiritual, moral and social development, aiming to nurture each child’s talents in a secure and happy environment. Recent investment through the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan has equipped classrooms with interactive screens and a set of iPads for the special‑needs classes, enhancing digital learning opportunities for all pupils. Scoil Naomh Muire also prides itself on a vibrant extra‑curricular programme: it holds five Green Flags for litter & waste, energy, water, transport and biodiversity; achieved its first Active Flag in 2019; participates in Sciath na Scol hurling and football; runs a VEX Robotics team to promote STEAM skills; and has earned over a dozen awards in the Discover Primary Science initiative. These activities, supported by an active Board of Management, Parents Association and dedicated staff, create a well‑rounded educational experience that extends beyond the classroom.

History

The school was extended in August 2013 to incorporate the special‑needs “Nead na Coille” classes. Further expansions followed in August 2017 and September 2022 to provide additional classrooms and facilities for a growing pupil population. In 2021 the school received a grant under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan, enabling the purchase of interactive screens and iPads for its special classes, thereby addressing the digital divide for learners at risk of educational disadvantage.
