About
Mulranny National School is a small primary school situated in the coastal village of Mulranny, County Mayo, on the shores of Clew Bay. The school serves approximately 70 pupils across Junior, Senior and senior classes, employing four mainstream teachers and a dedicated learning‑support teacher. The curriculum is delivered within a modernised environment that includes a 2007 extension to the original 1939 building, providing contemporary classroom spaces and facilities for digital learning. A 2021 grant under the Irish National Recovery and Resilience Plan equipped the school with a full set of Chromebooks, headphones and a charging trolley, ensuring every child can participate fully in digital education. The school is an active participant in the Department of Education’s DEIS (Delivering Equality and Opportunity in Schools) programme, targeting educational disadvantage, and holds the Green Flag for its commitment to environmental stewardship, recently receiving its eighth award for the “Global Citizenship – Marine Environment” theme. Mulranny National School also engages in the EU Erasmus+ “Compassionate Global Citizens” project, collaborating with partner schools in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Greece and Spain to explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on marine and environmental education.
History
Mulranny National School was originally built in 1939 with financial assistance from the Sisters of Mercy, who operated the school until it became a lay‑run institution in 1986. A new extension was added to the original building in 2007, expanding the school’s capacity and facilities.
