About
Scoil Aiséirí Chríost is a girls’ primary school situated on the north side of Cork City in the Farranree area. The school follows a holistic, child‑centred approach that blends guided discovery with structured learning, placing particular emphasis on language and numeracy development. Classrooms are staffed by a qualified primary teacher and a qualified childcare worker, ensuring a low teacher‑to‑pupil ratio (15 children per class) and personalised support. The Early Start pre‑school programme, operating for children aged three to just under five, delivers a two‑and‑a‑half‑hour day built around “learning through play”, incorporating free play, sand and water activities, art, music, and thematic investigations such as the solar system and local wildlife. The school’s facilities include a purpose‑built hall (opened 1960), dedicated Early Start classrooms, and outdoor play areas that support both physical and creative development. Strong parental involvement is encouraged through regular meetings, classroom activities, newsletters, and a two‑way communication platform (Class Dojo). Community partnership is reinforced by collaboration with the Home School Community Liaison Teacher and local primary, secondary, and special schools, fostering a supportive network for pupils and families.
History
Scoil Aiséirí Chríost opened in June 1959 on land purchased in “The Closes”, Farranree, originally serving both boys and girls. Founded by the Sisters of the North Presentation Convent, the school began with 424 pupils across nine girls’ classes and four boys’ classes. The school hall was added in 1960 and the Regina Coeli Convent was built the same year. In 1966 Scoil Íosagáin opened, transferring the boys to a separate school. The institution was split into Junior and Senior schools in 1967, which became two full‑range primary schools (Scoil A and Scoil B) in 1979. An Early Start pre‑school was introduced in 1995, and the two schools amalgamated in 1996 under a single principal.
