About

Scoil an tSeachtar Laoch is an Irish‑medium primary school situated on Ballymun Road, Dublin 11. It provides early years provision (Naíonraí Bheaga and Naíonraí Mhóra) and full primary education from Junior Infants to Sixth Class. The school follows a bilingual immersion model, delivering the curriculum through the Irish language while meeting the statutory requirements of the Irish primary syllabus. A strong emphasis is placed on cultural heritage, with daily Irish language lessons, Gaelic games, music and drama activities, and community projects such as environmental “green” travel initiatives and water‑conservation workshops. The school community is highly collaborative, with an active Parents’ Committee, a Management Board and a range of support services. Facilities include dedicated classrooms for each year group, a sports area used for football and other team games, and access to local resources such as the Rediscovery Centre for science‑based learning. Extra‑curricular programmes, including weekly Irish classes for parents, sports tournaments, and school‑wide events, foster a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere that encourages both academic achievement and personal development.

History

The idea for Scoil an tSeachtar Laoch originated in mid‑August 1970 when a working committee was formed in Ballymun to explore the community’s desire for an Irish‑medium school. After extensive research and negotiations with the Department of Education and the Dublin Archbishop, the school was finally established in 1973. It opened in July 1973 in a prefabricated building with three pupils on the roll, taught by a small team of pioneering staff. Over the decades the school has grown to a full primary provision, maintaining a strong parental involvement tradition and a commitment to delivering education through Irish.
