About
Scoil Mhuire GNS is a state‑funded primary school for girls situated in the seaside suburb of Sandymount, Dublin 4, close to the village and beach. The school delivers a child‑centred education within a caring Catholic and Christian ethos, while welcoming pupils of all faiths and none. Learning is organised around the individual needs of each child, with modern, purpose‑built facilities that support a wide range of activities and promote mutual respect between pupils and staff. The school benefits from an excellent location with easy access to DART and bus services, making the commute convenient for families across the local community. A strong partnership with the parish and wider neighbourhood creates a hub where pupils, parents, and community groups collaborate to enrich the educational experience. The Board of Management oversees compliance with all legal, safety and educational requirements set by the Department of Education and Skills, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for every learner.
History
The campus has hosted a primary school since 1861, originally one of the first houses of the Religious Sisters of Charity founded by Mary Aikenhead. A new school building, designed by Smith Kennedy Architects, was constructed in the early 1970s and officially opened in 1974 with a Blessing and Opening Mass celebrated by Archbishop Dermot Ryan and attended by Minister for Education Richard Burke T.D. The school originally admitted boys in Junior and Senior Infants and First Class, a practice that ceased shortly before the new building opened. Over the decades the school has evolved while retaining its Catholic ethos and community focus.
