About
Scoil Mhuire, Howth Primary School is a Catholic co‑educational primary school under the patronage of the Archdiocese of Dublin. The Board of Management, staff and parents work together to create a caring, nurturing atmosphere built on mutual respect and trust, where every child is valued and differences are respected. The school is committed to a high‑quality learning environment that promotes motivation, self‑discipline and academic excellence, while actively fostering inclusion so that pupils of diverse abilities and backgrounds can reach their full potential intellectually, socially, spiritually, emotionally and physically. Its curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant, aiming to develop each child as a confident individual, a cooperative member of society and a lifelong learner, with a strong awareness of Irish culture and the unique coastal environment of Howth. The campus sits on a hillside site and showcases local Howth stone in its original walls, complemented by the later addition of the Canon Thackaberry Wing and a spacious school hall. Recent extensions, begun in the late 2010s, have expanded classroom capacity to accommodate the school’s growing enrolment. The facilities support a safe, secure and attractive learning environment, enriched by a wide range of extracurricular activities, sports and cultural programmes that enhance the overall educational experience.
History
Scoil Mhuire, Beann Eadair was formally blessed on 20 May 1956 by Archbishop John Charles McQuaid and opened by Captain Gainsfort St Laurence. Constructed with local reddish‑brown Howth stone, the original building has been expanded over the decades, most notably with the addition of the Canon Thackaberry Wing and a school hall. Now in its seventh decade, the school celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2016 and has seen enrolment double in the past ten years, prompting a major extension project that commenced in early 2018.
